Through the Grapevine

Ask me anything   Submit   Hello all! My name is Kaitlin and I'm a Junior at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville Fl. I study Communications- primarily public relations, but I love all aspects of mass media. I have a personal Tumblr as well but I decided to dedicate this blog toward writing, music, news, and to use in the field. I'm excited to express myself through my writing and hopefully get further ahead in my career.

The ONLY reason I need to go to Coachella is Azealia Banks

cpatt:

not The Black Keys, M83, Bon Iver, David Guetta, Miike Snow, Feist, St. Vincent, Laura Marling, Justice, La Roux, Beirut, Girl Talk, Calvin Harris, or EVEN Florence and the Machine.

Coachella is overrated… but who can deny such musical beauty? haha

So I said that I’m turning into a music page for all things I love about music… well Here’s step number one.

I saw Surfer Blood last night (which was awesome) and knowing that I need to kick my little butt into music mode, I wrote a little article about the show. It’s pretty rough considering I really haven’t done a lot of this before.. (ever) so go easy on me. But I’m willing to share and get some feedback so let me know what you think. Here you are Tumblr.,

West Palm Beach’s, Surfer Blood rocked University of North Florida campus Sunday night. The crowed was surprisingly large for a Sunday but considering this is an underground indie band, their making some serious headway such as playing tonight on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and landing a record deal with Warner Bros. Records. The four person musical group put on a wonderful rock performance playing songs off of their Tarot Classics EP and a few others off their debut album Astro Coast. Lead singer, John Pual Pitts made sure that the crowd was always enjoying themselves by asking for feedback, walking off the stage to sing a lucky someone, or grabbing his guitar and enjoying a solo with other guitarist Thomas Fekete. Some of their songs included their recent single Miranda and slower ballads such as Voyager Reprise,  a brand new unreleased track, and my personal favorite I’m Not Ready.

It was refreshing to see a band simply enjoy playing their music for anyone willing to listen. Their mesmerizing guitar riffs captivated the audience without the need for lyrics to fill the gap (which is a difficult ability to find in musicians these days). If a bands focus is on the sound of the vocalist, then it demeans the sound of the other members but not in Surfer Blood. Mr. Pitts could have skipped entire verses of songs and the audience would have still enjoyed watching them jam out. In fact the band began their hour-long set with a three minute musical intro. Tyler Jerry Schwarz (drums) also kept the band going by keeping the beat through set changes and even included in a nice drum solo during their final song.

The audience consisted of some avid fans who knew most of their music and others who nodded and danced along with almost all the songs on the set list. Regardless if it was the audiences first time listening to Surfer Blood  or their fifth time at one of their shows, there was no one that couldn’t help but tap their feet to the beat or better yet, jump around and dance with others in the crowd.

Personally this was my first time seeing Surfer Blood live. I was impressed and would defiantly see them again next time they are in touring in the area. Their songs are mellow enough to just hang out and listen by the bar while other songs are up beat enough to make you want to grab a friend and dance along with the band. The band clearly puts an effort into making music that means something to them and was really responsive to the audience. I mean you really can’t help but move to this music, the melodies are perfect enough to stay stuck in your head and not annoy you while the lyrics are simple and poetic. Keep a lookout for this band in 2012 after seeing them on Sunday evening, I would expect them to do great things in the future.

This reminds me of Adriana because she always loves reading trilogy books from the young adult section.
